2024 TCS NYC Marathon Kicks Off: Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri Aim to Defend Titles

Race Day Details

The 2024 TCS NYC Marathon, one of the world's most prestigious marathons, officially commenced this weekend. Over 50,000 runners from around the globe gathered at the starting line in Staten Island, eager to conquer the iconic 26.2-mile course that winds through all five New York City boroughs.

Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, the reigning men's champion, and Hellen Obiri of Kenya, the defending women's titleholder, are both returning to defend their crowns. Tola won last year's race with a time of 2:07:19, while Obiri crossed the finish line in 2:22:23.

Contenders to Watch

Men's Race

Neben Tola, several other top contenders are vying for the men's title. These include Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia, the world record holder in the marathon; Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya, a three-time NYC Marathon champion; and Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands, last year's runner-up.

Women's Race

In the women's race, Obiri faces stiff competition from a formidable field. Among her challengers are Lonah Salpeter of Israel, who won the 2022 Tokyo Marathon; Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia, an Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000 meters; and Gotytom Gebreslase of Ethiopia, the reigning Olympic marathon champion.

Marathon Route and Charity Support

The TCS NYC Marathon course takes runners through the heart of New York City, passing iconic landmarks such as the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Times Square, and Central Park. Along the route, runners are cheered on by enthusiastic crowds and live music.

The marathon also serves as a major fundraising event for various charities. In 2023, runners raised over $60 million for over 500 charities, a testament to the event's positive impact beyond the race itself.
