Aldi caught in the act: Mogelpackung exposed

What is Mogelpackung?

Mogelpackung, a German term that translates to "deceptive packaging," refers to the practice of using packaging that is larger than necessary to make a product appear to contain more than it actually does. This deceptive practice can mislead consumers, as they may believe they are getting more product for their money than they actually are.

Aldi's deceptive packaging practices

Aldi, a popular German grocery store chain with locations in the United States and other countries, has been accused of engaging in Mogelpackung. In 2022, the German consumer organization Foodwatch conducted a study of Aldi's packaging and found that 40% of the products examined were using deceptive packaging.

One example of Aldi's Mogelpackung is the chain's "XXL" chocolate bar. The packaging of this product is significantly larger than the actual chocolate bar, making it appear to be much larger than it actually is. Foodwatch's study found that the packaging of the "XXL" chocolate bar was 30% larger than the actual chocolate bar.
