Arizona Cardinals Fire Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury
Kingsbury Finished with a 28-37-1 Record Over Four Seasons
The Arizona Cardinals have fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury after four seasons, the team announced Monday.
Kingsbury's Tenure in Arizona
Kingsbury was hired by the Cardinals in 2019 after spending six seasons as the head coach at Texas Tech. He led the Cardinals to a 28-37-1 record during his tenure, including a 4-13 mark in 2022.
The Cardinals made the playoffs once under Kingsbury, losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round in 2021.
Cardinals' Struggles in 2022
The Cardinals struggled mightily in 2022, finishing with the worst record in the NFL. The team's offense was particularly anemic, ranking near the bottom of the league in most major statistical categories.
Quarterback Kyler Murray, who signed a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension in the offseason, struggled mightily in 2022. He threw for just 2,368 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 14 games.
Kingsbury's Firing Not a Surprise
Kingsbury's firing was not a surprise, as the Cardinals had been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL in 2022. The team's struggles on offense, particularly with Murray, were a major factor in Kingsbury's dismissal.
The Cardinals are now in search of their fourth head coach since 2013. The team has not won a playoff game since 2015.
