The Atlanta Falcons have placed team doctor Dr. Andrew Cordle on leave after he was arrested and charged with child cruelty.
According to police, Cordle was arrested on Tuesday, July 11, and charged with one count of first-degree child cruelty. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred on June 26.
Details of the Allegations
The arrest warrant states that Cordle allegedly "did willfully and maliciously cause cruel and excessive physical pain" to a 5-year-old child.
The warrant further alleges that Cordle "did strike the child in the face with an open hand, causing the child to sustain a bloody nose and facial injuries."
Falcons Statement
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 12, the Falcons said they were "aware of the allegations against Dr. Cordle" and that they were "taking the matter very seriously."
The statement added that the Falcons have "placed Dr. Cordle on leave pending the outcome of the investigation."
Cordle's Attorney Responds
Cordle's attorney, Brian Steel, said in a statement that his client "denies the allegations" and that he "looks forward to clearing his name in court."
Steel added that Cordle "has been a respected doctor in the Atlanta community for many years" and that he is "confident that he will be exonerated of these charges."
Investigation Ongoing
The investigation into the allegations against Cordle is ongoing. The Atlanta Police Department is investigating the incident, and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office will determine whether to prosecute Cordle.
Cordle is scheduled to appear in court on July 24 for a bond hearing.
