ATP Tokyo: Medvedev, Hurkacz Advance, Shapovalov Upset

Russian, Pole Cruise Through in Japan

Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz cruised through their second-round matches at the ATP Tokyo on Wednesday, while Denis Shapovalov suffered a shock upset.

Top seed Medvedev, who is seeking his first title since May, defeated American Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour.

Giron Puts Up Fight

Giron, ranked 62nd in the world, gave Medvedev a tough fight in the first set, but the Russian broke serve at 4-4 and then served out the set.

Medvedev broke Giron's serve again in the first game of the second set and never looked back, winning the next five games to wrap up the match.

Hurkacz Dominates

Hurkacz, the fourth seed, was even more dominant in his victory over American J.J. Wolf, winning 6-2, 6-2 in just 68 minutes.

The Pole broke Wolf's serve three times in the first set and twice in the second set, winning 12 of the 16 games played.

Shapovalov Stumbles

Shapovalov, the seventh seed, was the only seeded player to lose on Wednesday, falling to American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4.

Fritz, ranked 12th in the world, broke Shapovalov's serve twice in each set, while saving all five break points he faced.

Other Results

In other action on Wednesday, Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia defeated American Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2, and Nick Kyrgios of Australia retired with an injury while trailing Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan 4-6, 4-1.
