ATP Tokyo: Wildcard Nishioka Upsets Top Seed Medvedev to Reach Semifinals

Nishioka's Stunning Victory

Kei Nishikori, the Japanese wildcard, pulled off a major upset at the ATP Tokyo Open on Friday, defeating top seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals.

Nishikori, ranked 41st in the world, broke Medvedev's serve twice in each set, taking advantage of the Russian's uncharacteristic errors.

Medvedev's Struggles

Medvedev, the world number four, struggled to find his rhythm throughout the match, making 29 unforced errors.

The Russian, who had won his last three tournaments, was broken for the first time in the match at 3-3 in the first set, and again at 5-4 when serving to stay in the set.

Nishikori's Path to the Semifinals

Nishikori will face either Miomir Kecmanovic or Soonwoo Kwon in the semifinals on Saturday.

The Japanese player is seeking his first ATP title since 2019, and a victory in Tokyo would be a major boost to his ranking and confidence.
