Five Ball Disaster Flips ODI On Its Head
England Suffer Shock ODI Defeat As Bangladesh Win By One Wicket
England's hopes of extending their impressive run of form in one-day international cricket ended abruptly on Saturday due to a chaotic batting performance in Dhaka against Bangladesh.
England was cruising to victory in the second ODI, having built a 130-run partnership for the first wicket between Jason Roy and Phil Salt. But it all fell apart when England collapsed, losing their last eight wickets for just 69 runs, with Bangladesh eventually securing a dramatic one-wicket victory.
Roy and Salt Give England Strong Start
Jason Roy and Phil Salt provided England with a solid start, scoring 56 and 77 respectively, to lay the foundation for a big total. The duo put on a century partnership for the first wicket, setting the stage for a dominant England performance.
England Collapse Spectacularly
However, despite their strong start, the England batting lineup failed to live up to expectations, losing wickets at regular intervals. Moeen Ali and Dawid Malan each contributed with 19 runs, but no other batter managed to pass the 15-run mark.
Bangladesh's bowlers took full advantage of England's collapse, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz leading the way with figures of 4 for 46. Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam also bowled well, picking up two wickets each.
Bangladesh Fight Back To Secure Victory
Bangladesh's chase of the revised target of 151 looked challenging, but they kept fighting until the end. Liton Das top-scored with 33, and Mahmudullah contributed with 22, as Bangladesh chipped away at England's total.
In a tense finale, Mehidy Hasan Miraz hit the winning runs with a boundary, sparking celebrations in the Bangladesh camp. The victory gave Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the third and final match scheduled for Tuesday.
Reaction
England captain Jos Buttler was disappointed with his team's performance, saying, "It's a tough one to take, to be honest. We were in a really strong position, but we didn't finish it off with the bat."
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was delighted with his team's victory, saying, "It's a great feeling to win against a strong team like England. We had a belief that we could do it, and we kept fighting until the end."
