Football Recap: Make It Eight in a Row for Penn Yan Academy/Dundee
Big Offense, Stout Defense Lead the Way
Penn Yan Academy/Dundee held visiting Bishop Kearney scoreless for three quarters Friday en route to a 42-14 victory at Penn Yan's Mustang Field.
Cooper McCord had a big all-around game for Penn Yan, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and hauling in three receptions for 79 yards and another score.Quarterback Kaden DeBoover completed eight of 15 passes for 215 yards and three TDs.
The Penn Yan defense intercepted Bishop Kearney five times after picking off three passes in their win last week against Bishop Kearney. On defense, Gavin Fingar led the way with two interceptions, while McCord, Austin Slater, and Branden Teeter each had one.
No Stopping Penn Yan Offense
Penn Yan scored on its opening possession, marching 54 yards on nine plays capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Brady DeHond.
Bishop Kearney tied the game on it's ensuing possession as quarterback Titus Jackson scored on a quarterback draw.
Special Teams Play a Role
Penn Yan took the lead for good on the ensuing kickoff as Slater recovered a fumble at the Kearney 41-yard line. Three plays later, McCord scored on a 3-yard run to give the Mustangs a 14-7 lead with 2:10 left in the first quarter.
After Fingar intercepted a pass on Kearney's next possession, Penn Yan took over at the Kearney 38-yard line.McCord capped the Mustang's third straight touchdown drive with a 9-yard run to increase the lead to 21-7.
McCord Continues to Impress
McCord got behind the Kearney secondary and hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass from DeBoover to give Penn Yan a 29-7 lead with 5:00 left in the second quarter.
Defense Comes Up Big
Penn Yan's defense got a big stop on Kearney's next possession as Teeter intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards to the Kearney 30 yard line. DeBoover connected with McCord for 22 yards to the 8-yard line. Two plays later, DeHond scored on a 1-yard plunge giving Penn Yan a 36-7 halftime lead.
Second Half No Different
DeBoover hit Hunter Stephens in stride for a 32-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 42-7 with 2:30 left in the third quarter.
Bishop Kearney scored its final touchdown of the game on a 25-yard scoring strike from backup quarterback Evan Mahar to Tyler Steger with 7:31 left in the fourth quarter.
Penn Yan Rolls to 5-0 Start
Penn Yan improved to 5-0 with the victory while Bishop Kearney dropped to 1-4.The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 238-57 this season.
Penn Yan will travel to Palmyra-Macedon next Friday night. Palmyra-Macedon is 4-1 this season following a 35-7 win over Monroe last Friday.
