Gateway Church Pastor Robert Morris Steps Down
Morris, who has led the megachurch for 35 years, announced his retirement in a surprise statement last week.
No reason was given, but Morris will remain on as a top adviser to the church.
Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, is one of the largest and most influential churches in the United States. Founded in 1980 by Robert and Debbie Morris, Gateway has grown to more than 40,000 members and has a global reach through its online ministry.
Morris is a charismatic leader who has been credited with helping to popularize the megachurch movement. He is also a prolific author and speaker, and his books have sold more than 5 million copies.
Morris's retirement comes at a time when Gateway Church is facing a number of challenges. The church has been criticized for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has also been sued by former employees who allege that they were discriminated against because of their sexual orientation.
Despite these challenges, Gateway Church is expected to continue to thrive under Morris's successor. The church has a strong leadership team in place, and it is well-positioned to continue to reach people with the message of the gospel.
