Jimmy Carter, The 39th President of the United States

Early Life and Education

James Earl Carter Jr., widely known as Jimmy Carter, was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. His father, James Earl Carter Sr., was a farmer and businessman, while his mother, Lillian Gordy Carter, was a registered nurse.

Carter attended the Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia, and later transferred to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1946, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.

Naval Career

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Carter served in the United States Navy for seven years. He served on several submarines, including the USS Pomfret and USS K-2. During his time in the Navy, Carter rose to the rank of Lieutenant.

Political Career

In 1962, Carter entered politics and won a seat in the Georgia State Senate. He served in the State Senate for six years, during which time he became known for his progressive views on civil rights and social justice.

Governor of Georgia

In 1970, Carter was elected as the 76th Governor of Georgia. As Governor, Carter implemented a number of reforms, including the creation of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the passage of the Georgia Open Records Act.

Presidency

In 1976, Carter was elected as the 39th President of the United States. During his presidency, Carter focused on domestic issues such as energy conservation, healthcare reform, and education. He also played a key role in negotiating the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

Post-Presidency

After leaving office in 1981, Carter founded the Carter Center, a non-profit organization that works to improve health, prevent conflict, and promote democracy around the world. Carter has remained actively involved in public life, advocating for human rights, peace, and social justice.
