Early Life and Career

Kris Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. He grew up in a military family and attended Pomona College in California, where he studied literature and philosophy. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War.

After leaving the Army, Kristofferson began his music career in Nashville, Tennessee. He signed a songwriting contract with Combine Music and wrote hit songs for artists such as Johnny Cash, Faron Young, and Ray Price.

Breakthrough as a Singer

In 1970, Kristofferson released his debut album, "Kristofferson," which included the hit singles "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down." The album was a critical and commercial success, and it established Kristofferson as a major force in country music.
