Marseille edge past Nantes to rise to second in Ligue 1
Dimitri Payet scores only goal as Marseille move above Lens on goal difference
Marseille moved up to second in Ligue 1 after beating Nantes 1-0 at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening. Dimitri Payet scored the only goal of the game in the first half, as Marseille made it three wins from their opening four games of the season.
Payet breaks the deadlock
Marseille were the better side in the first half and created a number of chances. Payet had the best of them in the 25th minute, when he collected a pass from Gerson and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.
Nantes improved after the break but could not find a way past the Marseille defence. Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez made a number of good saves to preserve his clean sheet and help his team move up to second in the table.
Marseille's strong start
Marseille have made a strong start to the season under new manager Igor Tudor. They have won three of their opening four games and are yet to concede a goal.
Payet has been in impressive form for Marseille this season, scoring three goals in four games. The French midfielder is now Marseille's joint-top scorer alongside Alexis Sanchez.
Nantes' disappointing start
Nantes have had a disappointing start to the season, losing three of their opening four games. They are now 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.
Nantes will be hoping to improve their form when they face Strasbourg at home next weekend.
