Rangers-Devils Brawl Marred By Injury, Suspensions
Line Brawl Breaks Out Late in Third Period
Trouba, Smith Suspended; Several Injured
The New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils engaged in a line brawl late in the third period of their game on Saturday night, resulting in multiple injuries and suspensions.
The brawl began with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, after Devils forward Tomas Tatar delivered a high hit on Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba. Trouba responded by dropping the gloves and fighting Tatar, sparking a melee that involved both teams.
Several players were injured in the brawl, including Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey, who suffered a lower-body injury and did not return to the game. Devils defenseman Ryan Graves also left the game with an upper-body injury.
After reviewing the incident, the NHL's Department of Player Safety suspended Trouba for three games and Smith for two games. Both players were cited for their roles in instigating the brawl.
The brawl overshadowed what was otherwise a competitive game, with the Rangers ultimately winning 5-3. The incident is sure to add another chapter to the rivalry between the two teams, which has been marked by several heated encounters in recent years.
